For safety reasons, more and more organizations are requiring that a child have an up-to-date physical on file. Many parents wait until the last minute because getting to their primary care physician during work hours is difficult. What is the purpose of the physical?

If your child appears healthy, getting the physical might feel like a formality, and hopefully, it is. Unfortunately, potentially serious conditions can be lurking just below the surface. A physical can help us find any issues that might exist so they can be treated before becoming an emergency.

Your Quick Med Care provider can also identify areas of risk for your child, and make recommendations on how to stay safe and injury-free – both on and off the field.

What happens during the physical?

The physical is designed to get a picture of the overall health of the child in order to determine if he/she should have any restrictions on physical activity. To do this, the provider will take a short medical history to see if there are any areas of concern prior to the physical examination.

Next, the provider will check vital signs, including blood pressure and pulse. We will listen to the heart and lungs, and look in the ears, nose, and throat. Height and weight will also be noted, as well as any growth spurts that might be putting stress on the body.

Additional exams that might be performed include an eye exam – to see if corrective lenses are necessary – and an assessment of the joints to test flexibility and make sure no trouble is hiding there.

Each provider is a little different, and methods may vary, but rest assured that when your child comes to Quick Care Med for a physical, we will perform a thorough assessment.
